Acute intermittent porphyria (AIP) is an uncommon monogenic autosomal dominant disorder with a defect in the haem biosynthesis pathway at the level of the enzyme porphobilinogen deaminase. The disease has low penetrance; most patients could stay asymptomatic throughout life.
